Winkworth Metal Roofing had 15 coppersmiths working on the 3,000sqm copper dome as part of the historic Smithfield Market’s transformation into the Museum of London. This is a prestigious project and one we are proud to work on, with George Winkworth having worked on the original copper roof in 1964. The copper dome is the prominent architectural feature of the restoration effort on the Grade II listed site. At 70m by 40m, the Poultry Market’s dome roof is claimed to be the largest concrete shell structure ever built, and is the largest clear spanning dome roof in Europe. Due to the shape of the roof, every copper tray had to be made by hand as each tray was tapered and fitted to the doubly curved surface of the roof. The project won Best Use of Hard Metals at the Pitched Roofing Awards 2024.
